Meet Janie Stel

Let’s get into it…

A champion in her own right, both on the bars and off, this athlete is determined to make an impact in the world and inspire women along the way. Look no further in finding a person with the ambition and hard work this calisthenic athlete exudes. Knocking on the door of impossible, one can only assume stellar was the perfect name for this JNM athlete. Without further ado, Canadian Champ, take it away…

Introduce Yourself!

Hello friends! My name is Janie, and I am a 21-year old Calisthenics Athlete from Toronto, Ontario, and I am currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia. I am also known as Stellarcalisthenics on social media where “Stellar” is a play off on my last name Stel. I am the co-founder of Calisthenics Vancouver, an initiative to unite the calisthenics community across Vancouver and serve as a governing body to help legitimize the sport in Canada. I am also currently a business student at the University of Guelph studying Marketing Management. Before Calisthenics I was a competitive Cheerleader for 5-years, and competitive Gymnast for 10-years. I plan to keep pushing my limits in every area of my life for as long as humanly possible, and at the same time I hope to inspire other women to do the same.

How do you keep motivated?

Surrounding myself with other positive and highly motivated individuals has been a game changer for me. This reminds me of the saying that you’re the sum of the five people you spend the most time with. I am very fortunate to spend most of my time with other highly motivated, resilient, and resourceful individuals that I aspire to be like. This brings me to another saying that if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. Social media has also been a powerful source of motivation for me. When used mindfully social media can be a great tool for motivation, discovering passions and connecting with like-minded individuals.

Who is your inspiration?

I have many different inspirations for each area of my life such as talented calisthenics athletes, successful business women, and ethical leaders. To name a few in that order Melanie Driessen, Sophia Amoruso, and Greta Thungberg. Melanie Driessen is a 2x Calisthenics World Champion, and besides being an incredible athlete she is an amazing person. Sophia Amoruso is the founder of Girlboss, a resource for advising and empowering women now worth over 200 million dollars, which is nothing compared to impact it has had on women’s lives. Lastly Greta Thungberg is an absolute badass, and has inspired millions including politicians to take action on climate change.

What is your favorite aspect about calisthenics?

My favorite aspect of calisthenics is that it embraces all forms of movement, style, and creativity. Unlike gymnastics, calisthenics does not chase perfection and there is no limit to your potential. When I got into calisthenics I was also very impressed with the accepting and encouraging culture of the calisthenics community, and I hope to see this continue with the growth of the sport.

What do you do when you’re not training or making content for IG/Tiktok?.

In my free time I am usually going on adventures, hanging with friends, cooking vegan food, reading, listening to podcasts, or watching Ted Talks.

Your favorite piece of Jed North clothing? What do you have your eye on next to get?

The flow leggings are my favorite because I’m usually training on a bar over a foam pit, and the foam does not stick to the material. Their also super soft and stretchy which is great for calisthenics. Definitely have my eye on the bloom leggings as I have been getting more into yoga recently.

What piece of advice would you give to the next generation wanting to follow in your footsteps?

-Use technology mindfully

-Mental health is just as important and physical health.

-Following your passions will naturally attract good things into your life.

-Allow things to flow in and out of your life.

-What is for you won’t go past you.

Lets’ get personal!

Going out or staying in?

For the longest time it was going out, but with the pandemic I have learned to appreciate staying in as I am becoming more in tune with my introverted side.

What music do you listen to? Favorite artist? Song?

I find myself listening to a wide variety but mostly alternative and electronic music. Specifically, I am a big fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Shania Twain who has been an inspiration to me for as long as I can remember. She is a Canadian Icon and feminist with an incredible story of tragedy and resilience.

Do you like travelling? If you do, where do you want to go next?

I love travelling especially for calisthenics. I would love to go to Bali or Barcelona as they have some really nice bars on the beach. Additionally, I plan to go to Amsterdam as a lot of my family is from Netherlands, and I would love to train with some of the amazing female athletes there.

Making her presence known, Janie can not only be seen on the Jed North Move page, but is also reposted on many other page across the world. Keep an eye out for this Canadian born athlete as she may very well be seen on bigger stages. To see other athletes like Janie, head over to @jednorthmove on Instagram, and be prepared to be amazed!
